Mechanical Engineer
Career Profile
A self-starter and results-oriented individual with expertise in a wide
variety
of design and engineering activities including mechanical design, machine
design, Computer Aided Design, CAD programming, drafting, documentation,
desktop publishing, HTML programming, and research and development.
Experience
Mechanical design
- Door hardware - Three years as a design engineer at
Schlage Lock Company. Designed the successful
L-Series
mortise locks. Patents on two different lock designs.
Consulting engineer for Corbin & Russwin Company. High
volume steel stampings, PM parts, and injection molding. Designs must
be cost effective, have long life, and comply with security standards.
- Electronic packaging - Designed enclosures for the electronics and
medical device industry. Consulting engineer for M.D. Engineering.
Sheet metal, injection molded, and cast aluminum housings in
a variety of sizes. Also designed and built tooling jigs for low production
volume pump housings. Consulting designer for Telenova. Designed modem
enclosures. Consulting designer for Biotrack. CAD layout and detailing
of blood analyzer
cartridges. Consulting designer for Prolog. Designed a desktop computer
enclosure supporting STDbus cards.
- Toys - Mechanical design on a number of toys as a consulting engineer for
Galoob Toys. Mostly injection molded and die cast parts. Flywheel and
compressed air powered toys. Plastic housings for video game cartridges.
Documentation
- CAD drafting - Initially trained in Computer Vision. Extensive use of
AutoCAD over the last fifteen years. All consulting jobs involved the use of
CAD. All mechanical drawing done in CAD format. Mostly AutoCAD. Trained in
Pro-Engineer for one major project.
- Technical writing - Have written several user manuals for Design Pacifica's
commercial software. Formats include, MS Word, Pagemaker, Ventura Publisher,
and HTML. Created this site and wrote an HTML based user manual.
CAD Consulting, Training, & Programming
- CAD implementation - Have helped companies set up AutoCAD systems according
to ANSI and ASME drafting standards as well as each companies own unique
standards. Insured that they produce consistent drawings that complied with
standards.
- Custom CAD programming - Consultant for the
Golden Gate Bridge District. Wrote two custom programs. Both
use DBASE data that was collected in the field. The first program read
sounding data from bay channels before and after dredging. The program
created three dimensional CAD maps of the channels automatically and
calculated dredging volume. The second program read corrosion data from each
bridge segment and drew a color-coded map of the Golden Gate Bridge showing
degree of corrosion underneath the roadway. Wrote a fire protection CAD
template for an insurance company. Created
SI Mechancical for
my own company and marketed and sold it since 1989. Developed coding
techniques for easy localization and translation to other languages for
non-programmers.
- CAD training - Provided training classes at numerous companies including
the Golden Gate Bridge District, Telenova, Sandia National Labs, Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory, Read-Rite, and many more.
- Technical Support - Have provided technical support for my
own commercial software as well as AutoCAD.
Other Technical Interests
Electric Vehicles
I have had a long time interest in
electric vehicles and renewable
energy. I have built two electric vehicles including a small scooter and a
roadster.
Both are suitable for around town errands and the roadster is also used for
short highway trips. I have also restored and upgraded several older
production electric vehicles.
I belong to the Electric Auto Association (EAA) and participate in
rallies and shows that they sponsor. I also participate in the EV Internet
Discussion List and promote EV charging and infrastructure locally.
Manufacturing & Machining
Manufacturing techniques and processes, both modern and old, is another
area of interest for me. In the past, I have experimented with Computer Numerical
Control (CNC) as it relates to CAD. I have followed rapid prototyping
techniques since the processes were developed in the mid 1980's.
A more recent interest is old machine and inspection tools. I try to
equip my shop with some of the
more classic and vintage tools and equipment that can
still produce work to modern, tight tolerances; mostly American made tools from
the 1920's through the 1960's.
